Irina Lubomirska

Irina joined our class actions department of Maurice Blackburn in 2004, after graduating from Melbourne University with first class honours in law. She is a skilful and highly experienced litigator and is particularly adept at dealing with technical and expert evidence.

“I feel like I was always going to be a lawyer, and practicing in class actions seems like it was the natural place for me to be – like fate,” says Irina.

“Class actions are an important and exciting area of the law in Australia. I find working in this area incredibly rewarding as class actions demonstrate clearly the capability of the law to empower the individual and enable them to confront and contend with – what would once have been – unassailably large corporations.”

Irina has acted in a number of notably successful past class action actions. The Kilmore-Kinglake Black Saturday bushfire class action was a hard-fought case that settled for the highest ever amount in Australian class actions history – $494 million after 18 months of trial in the Supreme Court of Victoria.

Irina also initiated the Bonsoy class action, which saw a $25 million settlement achieved for consumers of Bonsoy soy milk who were injured as a result of excessive levels of iodine in the soy milk, prior to its recall in December 2009. The class action will result in justice for around 500 injured consumers eligible for compensation in what was at that time was the largest successful food safety class action in Australia.

Irina also worked on the Biota v GlaxoSmithKline litigation, which was at the time one of the largest commercial actions in Victoria.
