Uber and the plaintiffs have agreed to a $271.8 million settlement to compensate taxi and hire car drivers, operators and licence holders, making it the fifth largest class action settlement in Australian legal history. This settlement is subject to approval by the Supreme Court of Victoria.

The proceedings were settled without admission of liability by Uber.

Maurice Blackburn Lawyers filed the class action in 2019 on behalf of more than 8,000 taxi and hire car owners and drivers.

Maurice Blackburn Lawyers Principal Michael Donelly said of the historic settlement “This will be one of the top five class action settlements in Australian legal history.”

“And we are extremely proud to have secured the fifth largest ever class action recovery in Australian history for our clients, a $271.8 million sum, which is subject to court approval. We consider this settlement to be fair and reasonable.”

While the plaintiffs maintain the claims made in the proceeding, nothing Maurice Blackburn has previously said or that we say in future should be understood as conveying that:

  • (a) Uber has admitted liability in respect of the claims made in the proceedings;
  • (b) Uber acted unlawfully, dishonestly or improperly, or otherwise did not act in good faith or did not believe that its actions were in accordance with its professional and legal obligations, in respect of the matters the subject of the claims made by the plaintiffs and group members in the proceedings; or
  • (c) Uber’s defence of the proceedings was without merit or had no reasonable prospects of success.
