Maurice Blackburn Principal Liberty Sanger, who will co-chair the Taskforce along with Parliamentary Secretary for Workplace Safety Bronwyn Halfpenny MP, said ensuring a specific focus on workplace sexual harassment was crucial to addressing the many wider gender equity issues facing women in the workforce.
“Our firm welcomes today’s announcement by the Andrews Government and I am honoured to be able to play a role in what I believe will be a vitally important Taskforce to help not only current victims of sexual harassment but also to help prevent harassment,” Ms Sanger said.
“Sadly, sexual harassment remains a scourge in too many workplaces across Australia.
“The flow-on consequences of sexual harassment at work are devastating – there are the immediate and long term physical and emotional impacts for women affected, but sexual harassment is also a workplace health and safety issue that significantly impacts on the ability of women more widely to participate fully in their workplaces.
“No one should have to endure being sexually harassed at work, and I am greatly looking forward to being able to play a role through this Taskforce in developing key reforms to help workplaces in Victoria both prevent and better respond to sexual harassment,” she said.
Liberty Sanger is the National head of Injuries Law at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers and Chair of the Equal Workplaces Advisory Council in Victoria.
