Am I part of the Sportsbet class action?
You are a Group Member in the Sportsbet Class Action if you made one or more in-play bets on a sporting event using Sportsbet’s Fast Code service between 24 December 2018 and 24 December 2024, and you lost more money than you won.
An in-play bet is one made after the beginning of a sporting event. The class action does not include bets placed on racing (horse, harness or greyhound) events.
Do I need to register to be part of the class action?
By registering you will receive updates about the case, and we will tell you if and when you need to do anything to claim compensation. You need to register to get these updates, but you don’t need to register to be a Group Member. If you meet the description above you are already part of the class action.

What is the Sportsbet class action about?
The case is about in-play bets (also known as live bets) made on sporting events using Sportsbet’s Fast Code service. The Fast Code service is part of the in-play betting product offered by Sportsbet. A code (e.g. ‘XPE’) is shown to the customer once they make a bet selection on the app or website. The customer then calls Sportsbet and the code is recited to a Sportsbet staff member as part of placing the bet.
Betting on a sporting event after the event commences is prohibited in Australia. There is an exception to this if the bet is made wholly by telephone. We allege that Sportsbet’s use of the Fast Code service is illegal because key information about the bet is communicated otherwise than by telephone.
Court and legal claims
The class action is being conducted in the Supreme Court of Victoria.
It alleges that Sportsbet’s Fast Code service is illegal under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 (Cth), and that by providing the illegal Fast Code service:
- Sportsbet engaged in misleading or deceptive conduct under the Australian Consumer Law;
- Sportsbet's contract with customers was illegal; and
- customers are entitled to a refund of their losses.
Frequently Asked Questions about the Sportsbet class action

Court orders are needed for any payments to be made to Maurice Blackburn.
More information about how costs will be paid is in the Funding Information Summary Statement
At this stage, it is not possible to predict how long the Class Action will take to be resolved. Class Actions usually take between 2 – 4 years to be resolved, although this is dependent on many factors during the legal process, including how the defendant responds to the case and how hard they fight it.
An in-play bet is one made after the beginning of a sporting event. In-play bets are also referred to as “live bets”. The class action does not include bets placed on racing (horse, harness or greyhound) events.
The Fast Code service operates by the customer selecting a bet on a live event (e.g. a certain team to win) on the Sportsbet app or website. The Sportsbet app or website then displays a code (e.g. XPE). The customer phones Sportsbet and recites the code to place the bet.
This class action is only for in-play bets made with Sportsbet. The class action does not seek compensation for bets made with other companies.
We are however investigating other possible actions, and there is a place in the registration form where you can indicate if you made an in-play bet with another company.
If you made at least one in-play bet using Sportsbet’s Fast Code service between 24 December 2018 and 24 December 2024 but are unsure if you lost money overall, we still encourage you to register your interest.
During the legal process Maurice Blackburn may be able to confirm which registrants made losses through the company’s records.
The Sportsbet Class Action alleges that customers who placed a losing in-play bet with Sportsbet’s Fast Code service are entitled to a refund of their losses, being bet sakes minus any wins or other returns.
The class action does not seek compensation for other losses a person may have suffered because of in-play betting or gambling with Sportsbet more generally.
If you believe you have a claim for additional compensation because of your individual circumstances, you will have to pursue this claim independently of the Sportsbet Class Action.
